The successful holding of last year’s G20 Summit in Bali succeeded in enhancing Indonesia’s image in the eyes of the world. Many appreciations came from officials and foreign media. Likewise with the WSBK and Moto GP 2022 events at the Mandalika Circuit.
This year, Indonesia has again received the mandate to host various prestigious international level events, ranging from world-class championships to conferences throughout Southeast Asia. There are at least 9 events that have been confirmed to be held in Indonesia throughout 2023. The following is a summary.
F1 Superboats
Lake Toba, North Sumatra, is getting ready to host a super fast boat race (F1 Superboat) which will be held on 24-26 February 2023. Indonesia has officially accepted chairmanship from the United Arab Emirates on Sunday (18/12/2022) . This event, in addition to increasing Indonesia’s prestige in front of the world, is also expected to be able to accelerate the economic pace of the surrounding community.
Millions of tourists are predicted to visit this one super priority tourism destination. Therefore, the government continues to accelerate various preparations to welcome the F1 Superboat, including empowering the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector in the Lake Toba area. They are expected to be able to read opportunities and take advantage of this momentum to promote their business.
WSBK, Marathon, Asia Road Racing and Moto GP
After success in 2022, Indonesia is confirmed to be hosting the second series of the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) for the 2023 season. This race will take place at the Pertamina International Street Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on March 3-5 2023.
Not only that, throughout 2023 the Mandalika Circuit will be enlivened by a number of other world-class tournaments, including: Shell Eco Marathon (July 1-10), Asia Road Racing Championship (August 11-13), and Moto GP (October 13-15) .
2023 U-20 World Cup
The ball party still seems to be going on. For the first time in history, Indonesia was chosen to host the U-20 World Cup which will start from 20 May to 11 June 2023.
The most anticipated tournament will be held at six of Indonesia’s best stadiums, including: Gelora Bung Karno (Jakarta), Gelora Sriwijaya Jakabaring (Palembang), Manahan (Solo), Gelora Bandung Lautan Api (Bandung), Captain I Wayan Dipta (Gianyar Bali), and Gelora Bung Tomo (Surabaya).
FIBA World Cup 2023
Next, Indonesia has been selected as the host for the 2023 Federation International Basket Ball of Association (FIBA) World Cup with Japan and the Philippines. Eight participating countries will participate in this championship and
will be held from August 25 to September 10. Indonesia is scheduled to hold two group matches in the first preliminary round and one group in the second preliminary round.
In order to support this championship competition, the government even built an international standard basketball building named Indonesia Arena. The stadium with a capacity of 16 thousand spectators is targeted to be completed in March.
ASEAN Summit
Apart from the championship, Indonesia is also the host for several world-level meetings, one of which is the 2023 ASEAN Summit. With the theme ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth, this meeting will be held in May 2023 using two locations, namely Labuan Bajo on Nusa Tenggara. East Southeast, and the Jakarta Convention Center. Various preparations are continuing, starting from repairing infrastructure, beautifying airports, ports, to lodging locations.
World Hydropower Congress 2023
Finally, Indonesia was lined up to host the 2023 World Hydropower Congress (WHC). This meeting will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, October 31 to November 2, 2023. With the theme “Powering Sustainable Growth”, the government targets this event to be attended by heads of state, corporate CEOs, investors, international financial institutions, and global media from 100 countries.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif said that this congress aims to discuss efforts to promote renewable energy and develop future industries through Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA), handling social-environmental issues, and building climate resilience to overcome drought and floods.
This activity also shows the commitment of the Government of Indonesia to the net zero emission mission , advancing sustainable hydroelectric power, and stopping the use of coal.
Not only improving Indonesia’s image in the eyes of the world, this activity is also used as a promotional event to attract investors for hydropower development in Indonesia.
