Even though there are currently many waves of Termination of Employment (PHK), the development of startup companies in Indonesia is still showing an increase. Not a few of these companies have entered unicorn status , aka startups , with a valuation of US$ 1 billion (Rp 14.3 trillion). Then, what are the unicorn startups ?
1. Gojek
You could say that Gojek is the first Indonesian startup to achieve unicorn status. This startup , which has been established since 2010, has received support from various large companies, from Telkomsel to Amazon and Google. Currently, Gojek has become a public company and has merged with another unicorn , Tokopedia.
2. Tokopedia
Founded one year earlier than Gojek, Tokopedia experienced rapid growth and became one of the largest startup marketplaces in Indonesia. This startup , which was founded in 2009, offers a variety of advantages, ranging from free promo services to easy transactions.
In terms of funding, Tokopedia has received funding from Google and an investment company from Singapore, Temasek Holdings. Now, Tokopedia has entered the GoTo section after officially merging with Gojek.
3. Bukalapak
This is another startup marketplace that has achieved unicorn status . Bukalapak is also the first unicorn startup to hold an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). This unicorn started taking the floor on the stock exchange since 2021 yesterday.
Bukalapak’s IPO value is said to be the largest IPO value in the history of the IDX. According to the prospectus report released by Bukalapak on July 27 2021, Bukalapak company shares (BUKA) are being offered to the public at a price of IDR 850/share. Apart from taking the floor on the stock exchange, Bukalapak has also invested in several companies, such as Allo Bank and PT Learning Grows Sharing.
4. Blibli
This startup , which is also a subsidiary of Djarum, is a marketplace startup that offers a back-end system . The system was created thanks to Blibli’s collaboration with banks, logistics partners, trade partners, and technology service providers.
Throughout 2017-2021, Blibli has acquired several companies, namely Tiket.com and PT Supra Boga Lestari Tbk. Most recently , this unicorn officially took the floor on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) this year.
5. Traveloka
This one is a startup that provides online hotel and flight ticket booking services that focus on domestic Indonesian travel. Over time, the startup founded by Ferry Unardi and friends, developed their services, where Traveloka now provides services for booking train tickets, buses, car rentals, and tourist activities.
Most recently , this unicorn startup has opened a new service, namely Traveloka Eats. This service can help tourists to find culinary recommendations in the tourist spots they visit. In 2020, Traveloka managed to secure funding of US$ 250 million.
6. tiket.com
Before there was Traveloka, there was tiket.com which was a pioneer in providing flight ticket and hotel booking services. On June 12 2017, 100 percent of this startup ‘s shares were acquired by Blibli. After the acquisition, there were no major changes from the board of directors at tiket.com. The changes to this startup are only the change of CEO.
7. Kopi Kenangan
Just founded in 2017 yesterday, the development of this startup is quite fast. There are already more than 230 Kopi Kenangan shops spread throughout Indonesia. This development attracted investment interest from popular names such as Eduardo Saverin and Jay-Z.
