Indonesian Coffee Dominates the Egyptian Market, Exports Reach IDR 1.46 Trillion

Indonesian coffee products have succeeded in dominating the Egyptian and North African markets. In 2023, Indonesia will become the largest coffee exporter to Egypt from all over the world with an export value of 92.96 million or the equivalent of IDR 1.46 trillion. This amount controls 42.69 percent of the coffee market share in Egypt.

“This indicates that Indonesian coffee products are loved by consumers in Egypt. “The distinctive aroma and taste are the main factors in attracting the interest of Egyptian consumers,” said the Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt Lutfi Rauf in a written statement in Damanhour, Beheira, Egypt, Tuesday (16/4/2024).

Lutfi explained that the companies exporting Indonesian coffee to Egypt consisted of: PT Asal Jaya, PT Taman Delta Indonesia, PT Olam Indonesia, and PT Golden Coffee Bean. Then, PT Asia Makmur, PT Ulubelu Cofco Abadi, PT Sarimakmur Tunggal Mandiri, PT Vastav, PT Sulotco Jaya Abadi, and PT Kans Agro Indonesia.

According to Lutfi, the increasing demand for coffee in Egypt—especially robusta coffee beans—makes the country a very potential market for Indonesian exporters. This is inseparable from the contribution of Al Amal for Agricultural Crops which continues to strive to increase the volume of imports of Indonesian robusta coffee beans to the Egyptian market.

“We appreciate the importer Al Amal for Agricultural Crops which continues to import Indonesian coffee beans. It is hoped that cooperation in the trade sector will continue to be established and developed,” he added.

At the same time, Trade Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, M. Syahran Bhakti S, said that Egypt is a country with a very high need for coffee. Indonesia, he said, competes with Vietnam, whose export value last year reached 48.07 million US dollars or IDR 760 billion. This amount is equivalent to 22.21 percent of the total coffee market share in Egypt.

Not only Vietnam, Brazil is also said to be Indonesia’s main competitor with an export value of 21.47 million US dollars or IDR 339 billion, equivalent to 9.92 percent of the coffee market share in Egypt.

“Egypt is the second largest market for Indonesian coffee exports to the global market after the United States. “Indonesian coffee exporters are expected to be able to meet the demand of coffee buyers in Egypt in 2024, the value of which is projected to reach 95 million US dollars or IDR 1.5 trillion,” explained Syahran.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the value of Indonesian coffee exports throughout the world reached 1.612 billion US dollars or the equivalent of IDR 25.5 trillion. Indonesian coffee in the Egyptian market represents 5.24 percent of the total Indonesian coffee market share in the world.

Al Amal Director for Agricultural Crops Ragab Shehata said his company had imported more than 4.5 thousand tonnes of Indonesian coffee beans, especially robusta, in 2023. He was committed to importing 5 thousand tonnes of Indonesian robusta coffee beans worth 21 million US dollars in 2024.

“The Al Amal for Agricultural Crops company also appreciates the Indonesian representatives in Cairo, export players and Indonesian coffee farmers, who have worked hard to provide the best coffee to the Egyptian market. This is very valuable for the development of the coffee industry in Egypt,” stressed Ragab .
